Places of Prayer & Solitude

This sculpture by the artist Francis Sedgwick is a powerful portrayal
of St. Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata on Mount LaVerna
in Tuscany, Italy, on September 17, 1224.

Queen of Angels Chapel is the center of
our life in community.
The story of our religious life
is etched in the stained glass windows
that embrace our prayer space.

In our sunroom is the artistic representation
of the sacred meal of St. Francis and St. Clare
at St. Mary of the Angels. The artist is Kay Francis
Berger, OSF, a Sister of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate.

The Heritage Chapel, the original chapel of the Sisters,
was located on the site of the first Motherhouse in Avilla, Indiana.

In June 1979 it was relocated behind the Motherhouse at St. Francis Woods.
It echoes with the vision, inspiration and prayers of the founding members.

Come to the quiet of St. Francis Woods
and walk the labyrinth,
a replica of the famous Chartres Labyrinth.

Stop in the Portiuncula Center for Prayer and tell the staff that you are on the grounds
and request a prayer guide for your labyrinth journey.

The peace pole, inscribed with the words "May peace prevail on earth,"
symbolizes our commitment to reduce violence.

St. Francis of Assisi (statue opposite Peace Pole)
ever challenges us by his words, calling us to be peacemakers.

The "Sinners Bell," brought from Germany
by our first Sisters, reminds us to work towards
the abolishment of the Death Penalty.

We continue to pray for those executed each month
and for all participating in the executions.
